Chandigarh : Sher-e-Jallandhar registered their first win in the Premier Hockey League (PHL) with a 2-0 win over Chennai Veerans, while Maratha Warriors notched up their second successive victory beating Bangalore Hi-Fliers by the same score-line at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here Sunday.
In the first two quarters, the match between the Shers’ and the Veerans was fiercely fought, but the Chennai team failed to capitalize on their chances.
However, three minutes into the third quarter, Shers took the lead with a Gagan Ajit Singh strike. Minutes later it was doubled through Jugraj, who converted a penalty corner with a weak grounder that went past Veerans’ custodian Sreejesh.
Shers, who lost to Hyderabad Sultans 0-3 in their opener, now have three points from two their matches, while for Veerans this is their second straight defeat.
Meanwhile, in the other match, the Maratha Warriors started on a low note but recovered in time. They took the lead in the 61st minute converting the eighth of their nine penalty corners through Dhananjay Mahadik whose drag-flick beat Hi-Fliers’ goalie Bharat Chetri.
In the very next minute, Warriors struck again through their Korean import Kweeom Moon to seal the issue after Hi-Fliers’ made a defensive lapse in the midfield.
