Karachi : Pakistan,s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday called for end of military role in politics of the country.
The army ruled Pakistan for more than 30 years in the country’s 60-year history and President Pervez Musharraf ruled the country as army chief for eight year. He quit as army chief last month.
“We want end of military intervention in politics for ever.
January 2008 elections will be a referendum in this regard,” Nawaz Sharif told hundreds of his supporters at Karachi.
Sharif arrived in Karachi for the first time after he returned to the country at the end of 7-year exile last month.
Nawaz told a news conference that a plan has been prepared to rig the upcoming parliamentary elections in favour of the party which is backed by President Pervez Musharraf.
“A plan has been prepared behind the curtain to rig the elections,” he said.
Nawaz is also leading his own faction of Muslim League-N but his nomination papers to stand in the January 8th elections have been rejected.
He said that his party will win the elections and that he will work for the independence of the judiciary, restoration of the constitution and rule of law.
Nawaz said every Pakistani should play their role for restoration of democracy and its promotion, safety of all basic rights of civil society and for economic strength of the country.
