Bangkok, Dec 24 (Prensa Latina) The People’s Power Party, winner of Sunday’s elections in Thailand, confirmed on Monday that it won the majority of seats in the House of Representatives, after an alliance with minority parties.
General Secretary Surapong Suebwonglee said the PPP and its associates can have between 280 and 290 seats of the 480 in Parliament, enough to shape the coalition Minister Council.
However, the Thai political veteran explained in a news conference that his party will not reveal the minority organizations that will compose that alliance until the final electoral results are announced after January 3.
The preliminary results of the vote show the PPP with 232 seats, while the Democratic Party, the oldest in Thailand, only won 165.
Chart Thai won 37 seats, Puea Pandin reached 25, Ruam Jai obtained nine, Matchima won seven, and Pracharaj secured five.
According to the influential Bangkok Post daily, the PPP, followers of overthrown Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has possibly reached a pact with Chart Thai and Puea Pandin, gathering 294 deputies.
PPP leader Samak Sundaravej, ex governor of Bangkok, stated that he would be the new Prime Minister and will work for Shinawatra’s return to Thailand, due to a possible amnesty for crimes of corruption and fraud, of which he has been accused.
The Electoral Commission reports that in this election, the first after the attempted military coup against Shinawatra on September 16, 70.2 percent of the 32 million registered voters took part.
