Colombo : Disaster struck Sri Lanka on the eve of the third anniversary of the tsunami as torrential rains displaced 211,613 people in the eastern and central parts of the island.
The rains lashed areas that had borne the brunt of the killer waves of the Dec 26, 2004, tsunami.
The Disaster Management Centre said Tuesday that an overflowing reservoir in the eastern district of Batticaloa had displaced 150,000 people. The unceasing downpour had thrown 20,000 out of their homes in Amparai, in the southeast, and 6,000 in Pollonnaruwa in central Sri Lanka, in the past two days.
Amparai district, and to a lesser extent Batticaloa district, had suffered extensively during the Boxing Day tsunami three years ago.
