Melbourne : Dozens of rowdy cricket fans were ejected from the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on the first day of the Boxing Day Test match, the Australian media reported it here Wednesday.
More than 30 boisterous spectators have been booted out of the stadium for throwing missiles during banned Mexican waves and other unruly conduct. One fan was fined Australian $215 (US$187) for re-entering the ground after being evicted, the online edition of the Herald Sun reported.
But police and Cricket Australia (CA) said the overwhelming majority of fans were enjoying the sun and the fun without causing trouble.
About 67,000 spectators flocked to the MCG Wednesday to watch the Aussies tackle India at the traditional Boxing Day Test match.
Police Superintendent Stephen Leane said the crowd, down from last year’s blockbuster against England during The Ashes, had been easier to control.
Police monitoring CCTV footage were swift in identifying troublemakers, Leane said.
“A small element have come to the cricket to play up … they have been easy to find,” Leane was quoted as saying by the daily.
Earlier police had warned racist, drunken and anti-social crowd tactics would not be tolerated. Cricket authorities have threatened fans guilty of making racist comments with life bans from the MCG.
