Top Irish surgeon who worked in India for 20 years is dead

London : William Rutherford, a leading surgeon in Northern Ireland who spent the first 20 years of his medical career in India, has died at the age of 86.

Rutherford treated victims of some of the worst atrocities of the disturbances in Northern Ireland over the years. He worked at a mission hospital in India for 20 years at the beginning of his career. He returned to Ireland from India when his children needed to finish their education.

Born in Warrenpoint in 1921, he moved to Dun Laoghaire before boarding at Campbell College Belfast and later graduating from Trinity College Dublin. He moved north in 1967 and worked at the City Hospital.

According to Irish News, Rutherford’s experience in running the casualty department during some of the worst years of the disturbances led to him being invited to seminars and conferences all over the world.
