New Delhi : President Pratibha Patil Thursday said the assassination of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto was a tragedy not just for that country but for the entire subcontinent.
Expressing deep shock and grief on the killing of Bhutto in an apparent suicide attack, Patil said: “It is a tragedy for the people of Pakistan to lose a leader of her stature in her prime. This tragedy underscores the menace that terrorism poses to us and to the stability of our societies.”
“The assassination of Bhutto is a tragedy not just for Pakistan but for our entire region,” she said.
Bhutto was killed during an election rally in Rawalpindi Thursday evening.
“We stand with the people of Pakistan in this hour of grief and tragedy,” Patil said in a statement.
