Moscow : Russia repeated on Tuesday that a legitimate solution to the statute of the Serbian province of Kosovo can only be found at the UN Security Council.

Precisely, the Council must make a definite decision based on a commitment between Serbia and the Albanian-Kosovars, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko.

He told a news conference here that only the ruling of that international body could be legitimate.

Yakovenko pointed out that as long as the Security Council does not make such a decision, the future of that Serbian province will remain one of the main issues on the UN agenda.

The Russian diplomat noted that the main outcome of the debates on Kosovo in 2007 was that the proposal of the West to implement the plan proposed by Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari unilaterally was not accepted.

Ahtisaari’s plan ignores the principles of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the UN statutes.

Recently, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a communiqué warning that the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization lack legal jurisdiction to modify a UN Resolution.

The debate on the statute of Kosovo is not in the sphere of competence of the EU and the western military alliance, Russia said.
