Belgrade : Serbia will continue to defend its territorial integrity exclusively by peaceful means and will not link the status of its breakaway province of Kosovo to the process of European integration, Itar Tass reported.
A Stabilization and Association Agreement that may be signed with the European Union early next year should be used in the interests of preserving Serbia’s sovereignty over Kosovo, says a draft resolution which the four-party ruling democratic coalition has submitted to Serbia’s parliament for approval.
The draft says Serbia should remain a neutral state and that the question of its entry into any military alliances should be put to a national referendum.
The pro-Western Liberal-Democratic Party, which believes that Serbia should give up Kosovo and join NATO as soon as possible, has disagreed with the draft. It’s planning to submit its own draft resolution to parliament.
The opposition Serbian Radical Party and the Socialist Party of Serbia will express their attitude on the draft supported by President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica during parliamentary debates on December 26.
The ruling coalition will have enough votes to endorse the resolution.
