Colombo : The Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) destroyed a Tamil Tiger naval base serving as a training centre in the Vellamulli-Vaikkala area of the north-eastern district of Mullaitivu, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said Thursday.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) did not report this incident, but said they had thwarted a move by the Sri Lankan forces to break through the Muhamalai checkpoint in Vavuniya district and the Palakkuli area in Mannar district.
The armed forces had lost two men in the two confrontations, the Tamil Tigers said in a release.
The MCNS said that an officer of the Special Task Force was killed in a blast in Kalavanchikudi in the eastern district of Batticaloa, and four civilians died in a claymore mine blast at the Kuramakadu junction in Vavuniya.
