DAMASCUS, Dec 29 (KUNA) — Foreign Minister Waleed Al-Muallem Saturday underlined importance of dialogue between Syria and the US based on mutual respect.
Al-Muallem made the remarks in a meeting here with US Republican Senator Arlen Specter and Democratic Congressman Patrick Kennedy, a statement by the foreign ministry said.
Both sides discussed bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Middle East, added the statement.
Al-Muallem said Syria was keen on establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East in line with UN resolutions and land-for-peace principle.
Specter said Syria could play an important role in the region, adding that he believed the US could have a role in relaunching the peace talks between Syria and Israel.
Specter will meet President Bashar Al-Assad tomorrow morning to discuss possible resumption of peace talks with Israel.
