The troops backed by helicopters conducted a joint operation against insurgents in the village of Sheikh Ibrahim near the town of Tal Afar, some 70 km west of Mosul, chief of the police Brigadier Ibrahim al-Jubouri said.

The operation resulted in the killing of five gunmen and the arrest of seven, along with seizure of four weapons caches, he said.

In a separate incident, a car bomb went off in the Qadsiyah neighbourhood in the eastern city of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, wounding seven people, local police said.

Mosul has been a hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the US-led invasion in 2003.
