“We are starting off the New Year with an important event. Road safety is one of the prime needs of today. Helmets and safety belts should not be looked upon as liabilities, but these guidelines should be observed by all drivers for their safety,” said Rakesh Bansal, additional chief secretary, Madhya Pradesh Transport Department, in an official release Sunday.

“Meetings of state, division and district-level road safety councils would be held to chalk out action plan for implementing guidelines and decisions announced by the union government and the state road safety council,” Bansal said.

Instructions have also been issued to repair all culverts and bridges, identify dangerous culverts and bridges, and erect notice boards on both sides to check accidents.

The divisional commissioners, collectors and superintendents of police have been asked to organise road safety activities during the week.

Nearly 90,000 persons are annually killed in road accidents in the country, causing a huge monetary loss to the society, an official release noted.
