19 killed in Egypt as bus falls into canal

Cairo, Jan 1 (DPA) At least 19 people were killed and 40 injured when a public bus plunged into an irrigation canal after colliding with a truck in southern Egypt, authorities have said.

The accident occurred Monday evening on a highway near Minya, 300 km south of Cairo, the authorities said.

The Cairo-Aswan highway, linking cities and villages along the Nile Valley, is notorious for its high rate of fatal automobile accidents.

Road accidents are frequent in Egypt and tend to be caused by defective road planning, speeding and a poor traffic control system. More than 6,000 people die every year in car accidents in Egypt, according to police estimates.
