A senior official of Northern Railway said: “This time of the year the average number of passengers is pretty modest, compared to say summer season, because of the bitter cold in both parts of Punjab, in India and Pakistan.”

Those going across to Pakistan are mostly from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and head for Karachi and those coming from Pakistan are generally headed for these places in India.

The Samjhauta Express runs every Monday and Thursday, returning every Tuesday and Friday.

India suspended all train and bus services, except the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service, the day after Bhutto’s killing on Thursday. These included the Samjhauta Express, the Munnabao-Khokhrapar Railway link and the Delhi-Lahore bus service.

While the Munnabao-Khokhrapar railway link and the Delhi-Lahore services still remain suspended the government decided Sunday to resume the Samjhauta Express.
