Kabul : At least 16 policemen have been killed by Taliban insurgents during an attack on a police checkpoint in troubled Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, an interior ministry spokesman said Monday.
Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Zamarai Bashari said that a group of militants attacked the police checkpoint in Maywand district Saturday, and 16 policemen were killed in the gun battle.
Whether the insurgents suffered any casualties was not clear, he added.
The Taliban has waged insurgency against the Afghan government since its ouster from power following the US-led invasion in late 2001.
