Six members of a family died early Tuesday morning at Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas district when a wall of their house collapsed due to heavy rainfall while one person died of electrocution in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas, police officials told IANS.

Police added that 21-year-old Moti Sheikh also died Tuesday morning after a wall collapsed on him in Entally area of central Kolkata.

Railway sources said several trains on both Sealdah and Howrah sections were disrupted due to water logging on the tracks. Bus services were also disrupted in Kolkata.

"There is water logging but our pumps worked to drain out the water. We tried our best to pump out the water," said Kolkata Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, even as the city's drainage system crumbled under a few hours' rainfall.

The mayor's own car was stranded in a water logged Kolkata street.

However, flights were not affected due to the inclement weather, V.K. Monga, director of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, told IANS.

"Flights are taking off and landing and our operations are on since Tuesday morning," he said.

The admission process in colleges like Presidency and Lady Braboune has been halted for a while due to the rain. The Rabindra Bharati University has postponed the MA exam that was to be held Tuesday.
