Kyuma told reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that his resignation was accepted, media reported.

During his speech Saturday in Chiba Prefecture, Kyuma had said that the US atomic bombing near the end of World War II "could not be helped".

His remarks drew fire from opposition parties and sparked protest especially in Hiroshima and Nagasaki which were destroyed by atomic bombing.

Abe on Monday warned Kyuma to be cautious about his words.
