Pakistan President should be stripped off power to dismiss government

Silicon Valley : Pakistan's president should be stripped off the power to remove the prime minister, failing which intelligence agencies or supporters of Taliban will use the office to create political instability in the country, former premier Benazir Bhutto has said.

Noting that Pakistan had witnessed political instability in the past because the ISI used to destabilise the government, she said it stemmed from the fact that the president has the power to dismiss the parliament.

Bhutto said part of her Pakistan Peoples Party's discussions with Musharraf have also focused on the need to balance the power between the president and the prime minister.

"As part of this balance, we must get rid of the power of the president to dismiss the parliament. Otherwise the ISI, the intelligence agencies or supporters of Taliban will once again use the presidency to create political instability in the country," she told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Speaking on South Asia, the former prime minister said a regional common market in the area could help undermine conflict.

"I feel that Europe overcame conflict by building democracy and regional market and I would like to see, particularly in South Asia, Pakistan work on democracy and reach out regionally with India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan on making a common market," she said.

"I believe if we have economic interdependence, may be we can undermine the forces that give rise to conflict." Speaking from London, Bhutto said she will return to Pakistan before the end of this year regardless of any negotiations with President Pervez Musharraf.
