Pakistan says no change in nuclear scientist’s status

By IRNA

Islamabad : Pakistan Monday denied reports that restrictions on nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan have been eased for the first time in his two-and-half-year detention at his residence.

"There is no change in the status of Dr. A.Q. Khan who continues to lead a quiet life with his family," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said while replying to a question in her weekly press briefing.

"Dr. Qadeer meets his friends and talks to the people, which was happening even before appearance of a news report on the subject," the spokesperson said.

Dr Khan was confined to his residence in Islamabad in February 2004 after he spoke on state-run television that he had been involved in export of nuclear technology.

"Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has been allowed to invite his close friends to his residence and that he can also visit them," a local daily reported.

The report said that Dr Khan recently invited five to six friends to lunch and dinner and he has also been given option to have lunch or dinner at any restaurant of his choice in the capital Islamabad.
