Much to the delight of residents, the skies in some areas were overcast right from the morning. By late afternoon, there was 9 mm of rainfall, the temperature sliding to 27.5 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had declared the arrival of monsoons in the capital June 28, a day ahead of schedule. But the capital did not witness much rain after the June 28 showers.

IMD director S.C. Bhan said the southwest monsoon had moved more towards Gujarat and Maharashtra after June 28, taking away the prospects of rains in Delhi.

"Things have changed and the monsoon system has now moved towards central Rajasthan. So Delhi has started experiencing rain. There will not be much change in the weather over the next few days," Bhan told IANS.

Delhiites, though happy to get much needed respite from the heat, were a bit anxious about possible water logging.

Resident Suman Kumar was apprehensive that heavy rains could flood the city roads.

"Rains in Delhi are not a source of happiness because it leads to severe water logging and traffic jams," he said.

IMD officials have predicted that Delhi will witness moderate rains accompanied by thundershowers in the next few days.
