Jammu : A soldier was killed and a major injured in a gunfight with militants in a forested area of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday morning.
A column of 48 Rashtriya Rifles of the army launched an operation in Manuwala area of Rajouri, about 200 km northwest of Jammu, following a tip off.
"As the troops were laying the cordon, they came under fire from the militants," a defence official here said.
Soldier Bharat Singh succumbed to bullet injuries in the stomach while Major James Stephan sustained wounds in the leg and ankle.
"The officer was shifted to the Command Hospital in Udhampur by helicopter," the official said.
More troops have been sent to the area to continue the operation. "We have no idea about the number or outfit of the militants," the official said.
