Vasishta, an officer of the Indian Railways Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE), replaces K.K. Bajpeyee who superannuated on June 30 after more than 36 years of service, an official release said.

RailTel registered a net profit of Rs.332.8 million in 2006-07.

The government had last year identified it as among the 89 under-performing public sector units, which may be referred to the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises for examination.

To ensure that it continues making profits, RailTel is planning to diversify into other business activities.

Vasishta has headed signalling and telecommunication departments of several zonal railways including Eastern Railway, Northern Railway and North-Western Railway.
