Sauyed Safikul Alam alias Sarfaraz Nawaz was arrested in Australia for living there for the last 11 years without any valid proof.

According to the local police, two women representatives of the Australia High Commission visited the Basirhat area in North 24-Parganas district near here Tuesday morning and enquired about the youth with the assistance of Basirhat police.

While West Bengal Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told IANS that he had no information about the visit, Basirhat police station officer Pranab Mitra confirmed the visit.

The two-member team and the local police went to Shankchuro and Ghojadanga border areas in Basirhat and enquired about Safikul. They also showed a photograph of Safikul to the local people but no one recognized him as a resident of that area.

The Australian representatives reportedly informed the local police that Safikul went to Australia in 1996 and had been living there since then without any legal documents.

Recently, the Australian police arrested him and he told them that he was a resident of Shankchuro in North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal.

One of the Australian representatives also informed the police that a written communication would be sent to the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Basirhat from the high commission, seeking relevant information about Safikul.
