Raipur : Vishwaranjan, who was additional director Intelligence Bureau (IB) till last week, Thursday assumed charge as Chhattisgarh's sixth Director General of Police.
The post had been lying vacant since May 21 when the state's 58-yr-old DGP, O.P. Rathor, died of a massive heart attack at a government function.
Vishwaranjan, a 1973 batch IPS officer, had held the post of district superintendent in the southern Maoist-hit Bastar district in 1981 when it was part of undivided Madhya Pradesh. He had been on deputation in the Intelligence Bureau in New Delhi since 1986.
"The fresh assignment is a challenge for me especially in the backdrop of Maoist violence in the state. I will do the best to overcome challenges," the new police chief told reporters.
