Colombo : At least six soldiers were killed by artillery fire by Tamil Tigers rebels in Sri Lanka's eastern Thoppigala area Friday as the military are on their final march to capture the region, defence officials said.
Military spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe said the soldiers were killed by mortar fire by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) around 12 p.m. local time and five soldiers suffered minor injuries in the attack.
Officials said an officer was among the six killed.
The attack came after the military said the Air Force had bombed selected Tiger positions in the area to support infantry troops who are currently in the process of clearing the area of LTTE rebels.
