Kaliningrad, on the Baltic Sea coast, has close economic ties with Lithuania that shares a border with it.

Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov Wednesday declared that Russia would install a missile system in Kaliningrad if the US insists on deploying its anti-missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

The declaration can be seen as part of a publicity campaign given that the country is soon to hold parliamentary elections and a presidential vote, the Lithuanian prime minister said Friday, adding that people in Kaliningrad would not take an interest in the missile plan.

Kirlilas called for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the region and a solution to environmental problems caused by weapons.
