Landslide kills 23 in northwest Pakistan

Islamabad : Floods and landslides caused by heavy rains killed 23 persons while 13 suffered injuries in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) late Saturday night, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported Sunday.

The incident occurred in Kohistan district, NWFP, and there were reports of several houses being buried under an avalanche in the same area.

The rescue team, made up of local people, recovered 23 bodies and shifted the injured to the district headquarters hospital.

The Pakistani meteorological office has forecast heavy monsoon rains with strong winds in upper parts of Punjab, Islamabad and the NWFP within 24 hours and high floods in the Indus tributaries.
