London : India's Leander Paes and his American partner Meghann Shaughnessy lost to unseeded French pair of Fabrice Santoro and Severine Bremond in a mixed doubles quarterfinal of Wimbledon.
The eighth seeded Indo-American duo went down 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to the French here Saturday.
That brought the curtain down on the Indian challenge at Wimbledon as Paes was the last player remaining in the draw.
Paes and Shaughnessy were off to a wonderful start sweeping aside their rivals in the first set 6-2. However, they could not sustain the momentum and the French pair bounced back hard taking the next two sets and the match to book a berth in the semi-finals.
Coincidentally, it was Santoro who, along with Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, ousted Paes and his Czech partner Martin Damm from the men's doubles event as well.
