New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Chandra Shekhar, one of his predecessors, at a hospital here Saturday night to enquire about his health.
Singh spent about 20 minutes with Chandra Shekhar, said doctors at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, who described the former prime minister's condition as "critical but stable".
Chandra Shekhar, 80, is suffering from bone cancer and has been convalescing at the hospital for the last two and a half months, said his personal secretary H.N. Sharma.
Sharma said his condition showed a "slight improvement. He is recognising people but is unable to speak".
Besides the prime minister, ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi also telephoned to ask about Chandra Shekhar's health, said Sharma.
Former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda also telephoned Saturday to ask how Chandra Shekhar was, and so did Kamal Morarka, a minister in the Chandra Shekhar government in 1990-91.
Five doctors from the Apollo hospital and a specialist from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been treating Chandra Shekhar.
The ailing leader is a Lok Sabha member from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh and leads the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya).
