Hyderabad : Two armed men Saturday barged into a bank in the temple town of Tirupati and looted Rs.800,000.

The robbery took place around 1 p.m. in a branch of Karur Vysya Bank in Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, about 500 km from here.

Police said two youths who were wearing helmets and were armed with a revolver each entered the private bank and after threatening the staff at gunpoint looted the cash.

The bank staff said the two men entered the bank minutes after the end of working hours. They downed the shutters from inside and warned the staff not to raise an alarm.

A bank employee told police that the duo ordered the cashier to put all the cash in the bank's vault in a bag.

After taking the cash, they placed another bag near the cash counter and warned the staff that there were bombs in it and they would explode them if anybody tried to inform the police.

The bank staff said the two men who were speaking in Tamil then went out of the bank, downed the shutters again and locked them from outside.

About 10 minutes later the bank employees informed the police, who went to the bank with bomb disposal equipment and its dog squad. After a thorough check of the bag, police said it did not contain a bomb.

The police force in the district, especially in the areas bordering Tamil Nadu, was alerted. Policemen were checking vehicles at various points in the town and other parts of the district.
