Tibetan in British Queen’s honours list

Dharamsala : A Tibetan refugee based in Sydney has become the first Tibetan to receive the Medal of the Order of Australia in the British Queen's birthday honours list, a spokesperson of the Tibetan government in exile said here Monday.

"Namgyal Tsering is the president of the Australian Tibetan Society since 1975. He was also president of the Tibetan Community Association between 1994-97," he said.

The award is in recognition of the years of service he has put in for the well-being of Tibetan refugees and in creating awareness about Tibet, the spokesperson added.

"He is also a member of the Australian Working Group of the International Commission of Jurists' Tibet Committee and a former senior manager with Cannon Australia Pvt Ltd," he noted.

T.P. Atisha, representative of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in Australia, said: "Tsering's achievement is a matter of great pride for Tibetans across the globe."
