"He has been discharged today from the hospital. He is absolutely fine now and doing great," Rupak Barua, chief operating officer (COO) of the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), told IANS.

"He would be in the city for a few more days before leaving for his country. We will be in touch till the time he leaves," Barua said.

"He is keeping very well now," said an official from the office of the Honorary French Consul here.

Rocard was admitted in the hospital on June 30 after he suffered from Subdural Hematoma (SDH) – a form of traumatic brain injury in which blood collects between dura (the outer protective covering of the brain) and the arachnoid (the middle layer of the meninges).

Rocard, 77, arrived here on June 29 to attend a series of functions at the invitation of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Rocard is a member of the Socialist Party in France who served as prime minister under then president Francois Mitterrand from 1988 to 1991.

The French politician, son of nuclear physicist Yves Rocard, is a member of the European Parliament.
