New Delhi : Renowned industrialist Bharat Ram of the DCM group died late Tuesday at the age of 93 following a prolonged illness.
Born on Oct 15, 1914, in Delhi, Bharat Ram did his graduation in economics from St. Stephen's College. After his graduation, he joined Delhi Cloth and General Mills Co. Ltd. (now DCM Ltd.) in 1935 as an apprentice and rose to the position of chairman and managing director in 1958.
Over the next quarter of a century DCM attained a pre-eminent position in the Indian corporate sector riding on the wings of its unique labour policies and its famed management training programmes.
After his retirement in 1985, the conglomerate was divided into separate companies. He was Chairman Emeritus of DCM Ltd., and Chairman Emeritus of SRF Ltd. He is also chairman of Coromandel Fertilizers Ltd.
Popularly known as Dr. Bharat Ram, he was involved in the establishment of the Delhi Golf Club and was an avid golfer.
He was one of the brains behind the formation of industry lobby Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) as well.
