Islamabad : Abdul Rashid Ghazi, deputy chief of Lal Masjid, was killed Tuesday by militants resisting the Pakistani army, the Pakistan government said.
Rebel cleric Rashid was killed when he tried to surrender to Pakistani forces which stormed the mosque, an interior ministry spokesman said.
"He was accompanied by four to five companions and he wanted to surrender when he was shot dead in a hail of bullets by other militants," Brigadier Javed Cheema said.
The army operation to take control of the mosque was continuing at the time of Ghazi's killing.
