New Delhi : The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Wednesday added five additional trains to handle the passenger load as over 60 percent of 'killer' Blueline buses stayed off the city roads fearing disciplinary action.
The five new trains – two each on Line I (Shahdara-Rithala) and Line III (Indraprastha-Dwarka Subcity) and one on Line II (Central Secretariat-Viswavidyalaya) started its operation Wednesday afternoon.
"On the request of the Delhi Chief Secretary, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has decided to induct five additional trains in service during the peak period from 4.30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to handle the extra rush of passengers on the Metro system," DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said.
Due to the ongoing action against the Blueline buses and their subsequent absence from city roads, extra passengers are already travelling by the Delhi Metro. On Tuesday, around 637,000 passengers travelled by the Metro while 613,000 commuters availed of the service on Monday.
The 65km network of Delhi Metro, the mass transit system of the Indian capital ferries nearly 525,000 passengers everyday.
"Extra token windows have also been opened at Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Welcome, Central Secretariat and New Delhi to avoid crowding at token sale counters," Dayal explained.
