Jaipur : Grandiose marriages are not the prerogative of city dwellers. A farmer’s son created a stir in a Rajasthan village by arriving on a helicopter for his wedding.

Hundreds gathered in Jajora village in Alwar district, 170 km from here, when Iqbal, 23, landed Wednesday to marry Ruksina, a final-year student in a graduate course.

As the wedding card had mentioned that the groom would come by helicopter, there was tremendous interest in the event.

“I saw a helicopter for the first time from so close. I am very happy,” said Shyam, a 15-year-old schoolboy.

To control the crowds, the district administration had to depute a dozen security personnel at the marriage venue.

Iqbal is a resident of Patan Firozepur in Nooha district of Haryana. After getting married, he left for his village with his wife at 4.30 p.m. the same day by the helicopter. His village is 110 km from Jajora.

“In our community the groom travels on a horse or an elephant. But I wanted to do something new, so I hired a helicopter,” Iqbal said.
