Ranchi : Former union minister and imprisoned Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren has sought permission from a Bihar court to allow him to vote in the July 19 presidential election since he is a Lok Sabha member.
As Soren has not resigned from the Lok Sabha, he is eligible to exercise his franchise in the forthcoming elections, official sources said.
However, he needs the court’s permission to come out of the jail if he has to cast his vote either in Ranchi or Delhi.
If the JMM leader wants to vote in Ranchi, he would require the permission of the Election Commission, sources added.
According to JMM sources, Soren’s lawyer Thursday submitted a petition to the court in Dumka district seeking permission to allow the JMM chief to cast his votes.
The JMM has announced to support United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential nominee Pratibha Patil, who was in Ranchi Tuesday to campaign for the forthcoming election.
Soren is currently serving life imprisonment in Dumka jail for the murder of his secretary Shashinath Jha.
