PM arriving today; Jammu under security grid

Jammu : Heavy security blanket has been thrown around Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit, who is arriving here on Sunday to receive Doctorate of Letters Degree from University of Jammu.

The security arrangements were reviewed at a high level meeting here this morning, which was followed by a rehearsal by the police and Central Reserve Police Force.

Sources said that while the security duty for the convocation venue and route leading to governor house has been given to the police and CRPF, the army has been put on standby to meet any emergent situation.

Three tire security ring has been thrown around the convocation venue and sharp shooters have been posted on the buildings around the university, official sources told News Agency of Kashmir adding, the civilian movement would also be restricted on all the roads around the campus till the PM leaves back to airport on a chopper.

"The PM is schedule to visit Raj Bhawan by road after the convocation and later lay a foundation stone at Jagti, where two room tenant accommodation is being constructed for Kashmiri migrants", sources said.

Special Security Group which is already in the town, has taken the control of inner most security ring in the auditorium. A team of National Security Guards was also schedule to arrive here this evening, sources added.

It was reliably learnt that some senior Congress leaders and legislators would accord a welcome to the prime minister at the airport.

The prime minister was earlier scheduled to visit Jammu on July 10 but the programme was rescheduled at the last movement keeping in view the sudden demise of former prime minister of India Chander Shekhar.

The Pradesh Congress Committee has decorated the town with buntings and banners to give it a festive look. Banners and Hoardings have been erected by the PCC leaders and Jammu Municipal Corporation at various places.
