Agartala : Tribal separatists have killed two ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leaders in Tripura in separate incidents, police Sunday said.
A police spokesperson said militants of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) late Saturday gunned down Manya Kumar Tripura, village committee chairman of the tribal autonomous district, at Chawmanu in Dhalai district, 115 km north of Agartala.
“The attack took place while Tripura and a few others were returning home after supervising work of photo electoral rolls for voters. Two others were injured in the attack,” the police official said.
In a separate incident, unidentified rebels Saturday shot dead another CPI-M leader, Haricharan Tripura, at Kali Bazar in south Tripura, 125 km south of here.
“The gunmen abducted the tribal leader from his home Friday and later shot him dead,” the official said. Police arrested one person in this connection.
Meanwhile, five labourers, abducted by militants about one and a half month ago in Dhalai district, were released Sunday.
