41 Indian athletes for Asian Championships

New Delhi : A 41-member Indian squad was announced Thursday for the Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Amman, Jordan, from July 25 to 29.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) said that the championships would provide an opportunity for athletes to qualify for the World Championships, which will be held in Osaka in August.

"The federation expects Anju Bobby George (long jump), Manjeet Kaur, Chitra K. Soman, Vikas Gowda, Krishna Punia, Sinimol Paulose, Surender Singh and Hamza to perform well," said AFI secretary Lalit Bhanot in a statement here.

In the previous championships in Incheon, South Korea, Indian athletes won four gold, five silver and four bronze medals.

The team will depart for Amman Friday by a Gulf Airlines flight.
