Chennai : A flood alert was sounded in 11 districts of Tamil Nadu Saturday as the Cauvery river was overflowing, forcing authorities to open the floodgates of the Mettur dam.
The water in the Stanley reservoir across the Cauvery at Mettur in Salem district of west Tamil Nadu crossed its capacity level of 120 feet. As many as 16 flood gates on the Tamil Nadu side had to be opened as the water inflow to the dam reached 107,429 cusecs Saturday morning.
The first flood alert was sounded by district authorities Thursday, while the second alert was sounded Saturday for people living on the riverbanks in the 11 districts the river flows through.
