Director General Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Waheed Arshad said that at least 30 rebels had died in clashes in the North Waziristan tribal region since late Sunday night.

Another five were killed in the same district in a battle that erupted at a check post on Monday evening that was still continuing, Arshad said.

Two soldiers had been killed and another 12 wounded in violence since Sunday, Arshad added.

Militants in North Waziristan on July 15 scrapped the peace accord reached with the government in September 2006 and threatened to launch more attacks against security forces in the region.
