Kolkata : A 22-year-old woman committed suicide after being rebuked by her husband for talking on the mobile phone, local reports said Monday.
The incident occurred Saturday night at Shantipur in Nadia, around 70 km from Kolkata. The cell phone was a constant source of friction between Smarajit Biswas, a weaver, and his wife Rupa.
The couple had been married for five years and would often quarrel about Rupa's excessive use of the mobile phone. However, the childless woman found the gadget a useful companion to beat her boredom.
"I had bought the mobile phone to keep in touch with my parents. But my wife always remained glued to the phone. She talked on the phone even while cooking. This often irritated me," said 30-year-old Smarajit.
When he returned home Saturday, Smarajit broke into a rage when he found his wife busy on the phone.
"He heard a male voice at the other end and snatched the phone from Rupa," said Anupam Chakraborty, the officer in charge of Shantipur police station.
Humiliated, Rupa went into her bedroom and hanged herself from the ceiling. Smarajit rushed her to Shantipur hospital where she died Sunday morning.
