The OV-10 Bronco crashed shortly after being airborne, prompting authorities to close the airport and redirect all flights to the Juanda Airport in neighbouring Surabaya.

"The plane carried two pilots, one of them is dead," Air Force spokesman Daryatmo was quoted by news website Detikcom as saying.

The Indonesian military has said it will replace all the ageing US-made Broncos with new aircraft.
