Musharraf congratulates Pratibha, hopes for better ties

New Delhi : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf Wednesday congratulated his Indian counterpart Pratibha Patil on her election to the top office and hoped for "enhancement of mutual trust and confidence" between the two countries.

"Excellency, it gives me great pleasure to extend to you warm felicitations on your election to the high office of the president of Republic of India," Musharraf said in his felicitation message to Patil, who was sworn in Wednesday as India's 12th president.

"I am convinced that in the coming years, our bilateral relations will continue to grow in strength in the interest of peace, progress and prosperity" of the people of the two countries, the Pakistan president said.

"I sincerely hope that your assumption of the august office would contribute to enhancement of mutual trust and confidence between our two countries," he said in his message to Patil, the first woman to become president of India.

The message was sent through the Ministry of External Affairs, Pakistan's Deputy High Commissioner Afrasiab said.
