Kolkata : An American embassy school was opened in Kolkata Thursday to cater to the children of diplomats and the international business community in eastern India.
US Consul General Henry Jardine launched American School Kolkata with only five students inside the premises of the consulate in central Kolkata. Jardine hoped it would grow from the elementary grades to middle school in time.
"As the school grows teachers would be recruited from overseas to meet the needs," Jardine told IANS.
The school – starting from the early elementary grades to grade 12 – would provide a US-based course curriculum for the children of foreign diplomats and international business families living in eastern India.
Jardine's wife Kathleen played a pivotal role in setting up the school and has joined as the head teacher.
American School already has branches in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.
