The prime minister and his wife Gursharan Kaur called on the new president at Rashtrapati Bhavan for a 20-minute meeting, a communiqué from the presidential palace said.

"The prime minister and his wife greeted the president on her assuming the office," the communiqué said. "The two leaders discussed matters of national and international importance."

This was the first meeting after Patil, 72, took the oath of office Wednesday as India's first woman president.

Earlier, Patil visited the memorials of presidents Zail Singh, Shanker Dayal Sharma, K.R. Narayanan and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and prime ministers Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Charan Singh and Chandra Shekhar.

She had paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial Wednesday.

Since Thursday morning, Patil received a steady stream of visitors at the presidential palace where she moved in Wednesday. Most visitors were from her "home states" Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Patil is from Maharashtra's Jalgaon district while her husband Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat is a Rajput from Sikhar in Rajasthan who has now settled in Maharashtra.
