Babli Kazmi, 30, was arrested Wednesday night by officials of the Detective Department of the Kolkata Police. She had allegedly appeared for this year's West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for entrance to medical colleges on behalf of Rupa Majumdar, a resident of Durgapur and helped her secure the 707th rank.

Babli, a resident of Varanasi, had been privately coaching secondary and higher secondary students for the past few years and kept herself updated with the syllabus. She allegedly got involved in the medical entrance impersonation racket through Ranvijay Pathak, another Varanasi resident.

Kolkata Police had arrested Pathak July 21 in connection with the racket.

"Babli flew to Kolkata for the medical entrance test and was put up in a hotel by Ayan Mukhopadhyay, an intern at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital," said Kolkata Police (Detective Department) deputy commissioner Ajoy Kumar.

Police had earlier arrested Mukhopadhyay along with two other people – Mihir Jha, and Sumita Chatterjee – for their alleged involvement in the racket.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated a probe into the medical entrance scam. State home secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy said Tuesday that the government might order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, if necessary.
