The attack on the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp took place close to the Zakura Police Station, 14 km from Lal Chowk – the city centre.

"Two militants hurled grenades and opened heavy fire at the sentry post (outside the camp)," a senior CRPF officer told IANS here.

The guerrillas were still holed up inside the camp, the officer said mid-morning.

Unconfirmed reports said the troopers had shot down one of the militants.

A local resident reached by phone said heavy exchange of fire was continuing as the roar of gunshots could be heard reverberating around the neighbourhood.

The area where the attack took place – on the Srinagar-Kargil Highway – is on the route of pilgrims to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath via the north Kashmir Baltal base camp. In the wake of the attack traffic has been diverted to other routes.
